Dr. Sylvia Huang earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology at University of Alabama and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Palliative Psychology and Psycho-oncology at UAB. She serves as PI on the Psychosocial Oncology Training Academy (POTA) and as Director of Psychology and Counseling Program at UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care. She provides counseling to patients and families facing serious and/or terminal illness and spearheads the Psycho-Oncology Distress Screening and Management Program at UAB.

Stacey has worked in the Center for Palliative and Supportive Care at UAB as a Program Manager for many years. Her work has enabled the Center to successfully launch the Southeast Institute for Innovation in Palliative and Supportive Care (SIIPSC) through a 2-day Summit as well as coordinate the activities of a nationally funded pain focused educational program.

Jared Ball, MPH

A Birmingham native, Jared is a double graduate of UAB – a Bachelor of Science in Public Health (2016) and a Master’s in Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy (2018). Jared started his healthcare career in June 2016 as a Transitional Care Facilitator for Viva Health, where he met and enrolled patients in the Birmingham and Montgomery metropolitan areas into a Medicaid care management program that focused on lowering hospital readmissions for patients with multiple co-morbidities. In October 2019, he started the BPH patient navigation program at Urology Centers of Alabama, increasing patient return visits and patient satisfaction during his year there. Since joining CPSC in October 2020, Jared has been focused on driving the educational programs and initiatives of the Center to increase access to high quality Palliative Care services for patients and families with serious illnesses in Alabama, the Southeast, and beyond.
 

Rodney O. Tucker, MD, MMM
POTA Advisor


Dr. Tucker joined the Center for Palliative and Supportive Care at UAB in January of 2002. Dr. Tucker is currently serving as Director for the Center for Palliative and Supportive Care since 2013, the Ritchie Endowed Chair since 2016 and the Chief Experience Officer for UAB Medicine since 2013. Over the 6 years prior to joining the Center, Dr. Tucker also served as the Medical Director for Alacare Home Health and Hospice. He is board certified in Internal Medicine as well as Hospice and Palliative Medicine and his interests include palliative care in chronic illnesses such as heart failure and HIV. Dr. Tucker is also interested in the delivery of healthcare and the systems involved in providing comprehensive palliative care across settings.

Jennifer has worked at UAB since October 2011 where she served as Program Manager for the Supportive Care and Survivorship Program. In January 2014, Jennifer was named the Administrative Director of the UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care. Her focus is on strategic planning, business development, and partnerships.

Diane Tucker, PhD

Dr. Diane Tucker is Professor and Director of UAB Science and Technology Honors  Program. She earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology and has served on faculty for 36 years. Dr. Tucker is a member of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and is one of the founding members of UAB Palliative Care. She has served as a psychologist with the Supportive Care and Survivorship Clinic since 2006 and has published in psycho‐oncology, breast cancer, and decision making at the end of life.

Where and when will the workshop(s) take place?

The next workshop is scheduled for February 23-24, 2024 from 8am-5pm each day. It will be held at the Smooth Rock Conference Center, 1940 Stonegate Dr, Vestavia Hills, AL 35242.

What should I expect from the primary care track?

The one-hour POTA bite-size videos for the interprofessional healthcare track will be available on-line for you to complete at your own pace to earn 1 CME/CE credit hour. Although it is not required for interprofessional healthcare track attendees to participate in the mental health track live workshops, you are eligible to sign-up for the mental health track and earn up to an additional 16 CME/CE credit hours to enhance your clinical competency in psychosocial oncology.  

What should I expect from the mental health care track?

We STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you register and complete the interprofessional healthcare track one hour bite-size videos to build the fundamental knowledge of breast cancer care. You will earn 1 CME/CE credit hour for the bite-size videos before you attend the live workshops. The workshops will be offered over the course of a year in four-hour sessions. The combined workshops will offer a total of 16 CME/CE credit hours.

How do I access the POTA training?

Please click on the REGISTER button located in the top right-hand corner of the website to sign-up for POTA training. 

    What is the cost for POTA training?

    Currently, there is no fee for the POTA training.

    How do I access the POTA post-workshop conference calls?

    The POTA post-workshop conference calls will be held every other month starting in March on the 2nd Tuesday at 1pm. Information about how to access the conference calls will be sent to the email address on file.
